Visa has announced the introduction of the Visa Tokenized Asset Platform (VTAP), a new tool designed to help banks issue fiat-backed tokens on blockchain networks. This innovation allows financial institutions to manage these tokens through Visa’s established digital payment systems, bridging the gap between traditional fiat currencies and blockchain technology.
Empowering Banks with Fiat-Backed Tokens
VTAP will provide banks with an easy-to-integrate platform to create, transfer, and redeem fiat-backed tokens like tokenized deposits and stablecoins. It allows them to use these tokens within smart contracts, which could automate processes such as lines of credit and real-time settlement of tokenized assets.
Future Use Cases and Industry Partnerships
Visa is preparing to support real-world programs by 2025. Partner banks like BBVA have already begun testing the VTAP sandbox, exploring blockchain functionalities like token issuance and smart contract integration. The initial pilot is set to launch on Ethereum.
This platform signifies Visa’s broader vision to enable interoperability across different blockchains, positioning itself at the forefront of digital asset innovation.
