Uniswap is preparing to launch Unichain, a Layer 2 scaling solution tailored for decentralized finance (DeFi). Built on the OP Stack, the mainnet is expected to go live in early 2025, after extensive testing on Ethereum’s Sepolia testnet since October.
The Sepolia testnet has already processed over 50 million test transactions and deployed 4 million smart contracts, maintaining an uptime of over 99%. Starting January 6, 2025, planned maintenance will enable permissionless fault proofs, which allow users to verify blockchain state and challenge invalid transactions, enhancing security and reliability.
Features to Watch for on Unichain
- Flashblocks: Reduces block times to 250 milliseconds for faster transactions.
- Unichain Validation Network: Decentralized infrastructure with independent node operators to avoid single-sequencer risks.
- Rollup-Boost: Enhanced block-building platform from Flashbots for improved functionality.
Unichain will join Optimism’s Superchain ecosystem, with Uniswap Labs playing a key role in OP Stack contributions. The mainnet will support asset bridging and DeFi applications, solidifying Uniswap’s role in the Layer 2 space.
Record Trading Volumes on Ethereum Layer 2
Uniswap recently hit a $38 billion monthly trading volume on Ethereum Layer 2s, surpassing its previous record by $4 billion. Platforms like Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Polygon contributed to this surge in DeFi activity.
Uniswap Foundation Updates
The Foundation reported holding $36.81 million in cash and stablecoins, alongside 680,000 UNI tokens for operational and grant purposes. Q2 saw $3.2 million in new grants approved, with $2.5 million distributed and operating expenses totaling $1.6 million.
