Gold vs. Bitcoin: Why Peter Schiff Doesn’t See BTC as a Reserve Asset

Peter Schiff explains why Gold remains dominant as Bitcoin struggles to prove itself as a true reserve asset.

As debates grow around alternatives to the U.S. dollar, the long-running Gold vs. Bitcoin discussion is back in focus. Economist and outspoken gold advocate Peter Schiff has once again pushed back against the idea that Bitcoin could ever function as a global reserve currency.

Schiff argues that Bitcoin’s value is still driven mainly by speculation, not by real economic use. In his view, a true reserve asset must reliably store value, remain liquid during crises, and hold demand beyond price expectations. Bitcoin, he says, fails that test.

During a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, Schiff stressed that Bitcoin doesn’t generate income, isn’t consumed, and has no industrial application. According to him, people buy BTC largely because they expect to sell it later at a higher price. That dynamic, he claims, disqualifies it from being considered money.

Gold has so dramatically outperformed the S&P this century that you’d think CNBC would be recommending it to investors. But they’re not. Peter Schiff explains why.

By contrast, Gold has a long history of meeting those standards. Schiff pointed to its scarcity, durability, and real-world uses as reasons it continues to be trusted by central banks. He also noted that while crypto adoption is growing, global institutions still overwhelmingly choose gold when building reserves.

Schiff further highlighted that central banks consistently accumulate gold, not Bitcoin. For him, that behavior alone signals which asset governments truly trust when stability matters most. Technology shifts or market sentiment don’t impact gold’s existence, whereas Bitcoin depends entirely on digital infrastructure.

He also took aim at the crypto industry’s push for regulation, arguing that it’s less about legal clarity and more about legitimacy.

“They do not want clarity; they want validation,”

Schiff said.

While some figures in the crypto space believe Bitcoin could eventually play a larger monetary role, Schiff remains unconvinced. In his view, when it comes to reserve assets, Gold still stands on solid ground, while Bitcoin remains an experiment driven by belief rather than fundamentals.
