Tether Introduces Easier Bitcoin Onboarding

Tether has rolled out a new Bitcoin faucet inside its self-custody wallet, giving users small BTC rewards through the Lightning Network as a simple way to get started with Bitcoin.

The feature, unveiled by Paolo Ardoino at the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Lugano, lets users claim sats by linking their tether.me username and engaging with Tether’s official social posts. Once verified through a response tagged with @btc, payouts are sent instantly through Lightning.

The @btc Bitcoin Faucet by @tetherwallet is now live, allowing users to claim a small amount of free satoshis via the Lightning Network.

Lightning Powers Instant Bitcoin Rewards

By using the Lightning Network, Tether is turning the faucet into a practical entry point for newcomers, allowing users to try fast, low-cost Bitcoin transactions without dealing with traditional fees or slower settlement times.

The setup also leans on username-based transfers instead of long wallet addresses, making the process more approachable for first-time users.

Part of Tether’s Self-Custody Push

The faucet ties into Tether’s broader push toward self-custody, bringing Bitcoin, USDT and Tether Gold together in one wallet. The small BTC rewards act as an incentive while giving users a hands-on way to explore managing assets without relying on third parties.

As Ardoino put it, the goal is to make Bitcoin easier to access through tools people can use right away.

A Modern Take on an Old Bitcoin Idea

The launch also revives one of Bitcoin’s earliest growth tactics: faucets.

The model traces back to Gavin Andresen, who famously gave away 5 BTC per user in Bitcoin’s early days. More recently, Jack Dorsey has also signaled plans to revisit the concept through btc.day.

With Tether bringing the idea into a Lightning-powered wallet experience, the old faucet model is getting a distinctly modern Bitcoin upgrade.
