France is becoming one of the main countries linked to violent robberies and kidnappings targeting people involved in crypto, raising fresh concerns around privacy and personal security.

According to Bitcoin journalist Joe Nakamoto, around 70% of publicly reported wrench attacks this year have happened in France. These attacks involve criminals using threats, kidnappings, or physical violence to force victims into giving up access to their wallets or funds.

He states there have been 41 kidnappings in 4 months, making France one of the most dangerous places to own $BTC.

So far in 2026, France has reportedly seen 41 crypto-related kidnapping cases, roughly one every two and a half days.

Why France Is Being Targeted

Nakamoto pointed to leaked personal data and KYC records as a major issue. Criminals are reportedly using exposed names, phone numbers, emails, and home addresses to identify potential victims connected to crypto.

The 2020 Ledger data breach remains one of the biggest examples. The leak exposed information linked to more than 270,000 customers worldwide and is still frequently mentioned in discussions about user safety.

“France is the canary in the coal mine, demonstrating how financial regulations create a surveillance apparatus that causes direct harm to bitcoin holders,”

said Casa CEO Jameson Lopp.

Authorities Respond as Cases Increase

French authorities have already expanded investigations into multiple organized groups linked to these attacks. Reports from earlier this year said 88 suspects were charged across several cases, including minors.

Investigators have tracked a sharp increase in incidents over the past few years, pushing officials to consider broader security measures and prevention plans.

Safety Concerns Grow for Crypto Users

Nakamoto also warned that many attackers are recruited online, with criminal groups sometimes operating from outside France while using local teenagers to carry out the crimes.

He advised users to avoid publicly showing wealth or sharing information that could expose their involvement in crypto. Security experts have also suggested using decoy wallets and emergency custody features designed for high-risk situations.

The growing number of attacks in France is adding pressure to the wider debate around privacy, data protection, and how exposed personal information can quickly turn into real-world danger for crypto holders.
