Why Coinbase’s CEO thinks the system still needs an overhaul
Brian Armstrong believes the next phase of finance will run largely on blockchain rails, but says the transition is still far from complete.
In a recent post, Armstrong outlined several areas he believes still need major improvement before on-chain finance can reach mainstream adoption. His focus included tokenized assets, stablecoin payments, AI-powered transactions, self-custody wallets, and clearer regulation.
“Jobs not done until we get these working for all.”
Tokenization remains a major focus
Armstrong placed tokenized real-world assets at the center of the shift. He pointed to assets like stocks, real estate, and bonds moving on-chain to allow faster settlement, broader access, and fractional ownership.

The sector has continued gaining momentum throughout 2026, with tokenized assets becoming one of the fastest-growing areas in blockchain-based finance.
Stablecoins and AI payments keep expanding
Another key theme from Armstrong was the rise of instant global payments powered by stablecoins.
Coinbase has recently expanded its work around AI-driven payments and automated transactions. The company’s infrastructure now allows AI agents to send and receive USDC payments with minimal human involvement, highlighting how automation could reshape online commerce.

Armstrong suggested future financial systems will become more global, automated, and always online.
Regulation still matters
Armstrong also stressed the need for clearer and more flexible regulation. According to him, outdated frameworks could slow innovation, while risk-based rules may help new financial technologies grow more responsibly.
Coinbase has recently supported legislation in the United States aimed at providing clearer guidelines around stablecoins, DeFi, and digital asset markets.
A more open financial system
Armstrong’s broader vision centers on reducing friction in global finance through open access, fewer intermediaries, and self-custody tools that can be used directly from smartphones.
His message reflects a growing push toward faster, borderless financial infrastructure powered by blockchain technology, stablecoins, and AI.
