In a move aimed at shaking up global payments, PayPal has introduced a crypto-based checkout service that dramatically lowers international transaction fees, reportedly by up to 90% compared to the usual credit card processors.
The feature, quietly rolled out under the name “Pay with Crypto,” enables instant crypto-to-fiat conversions, including into PayPal’s own stablecoin, PYUSD. It works with over 100 cryptocurrencies and integrates with popular wallets like Coinbase and MetaMask, giving users plenty of flexibility at checkout.
According to the company, the service opens the door to 650 million potential crypto users worldwide, offering merchants an efficient way to tap into this growing economy without the high costs or delays typically associated with international payments.

Alex Chriss, PayPal’s CEO, highlighted the broader impact of the new service:
“Imagine a shopper in Guatemala buying a special gift from a merchant in Oklahoma City. Using PayPal’s open platform, the business can accept crypto for payments, increase their profit margins, pay lower transaction fees, get near instant access to proceeds, and grow funds stored as PYUSD at 4% when held on PayPal.”
The update simplifies the process for both sides, buyers can pay in crypto, sellers receive local currency almost instantly, and everyone avoids the bloated fees.
This launch comes alongside another initiative, “PayPal World,” a platform designed to connect major payment apps globally. The rollout includes collaboration with big names like Venmo, Tenpay Global, NPCI International (UPI), and Mercado Pago, aiming to streamline cross-border wallet interoperability.
Chriss added:
“These innovations don’t just simplify payments, they drive merchant growth, expand consumer choice, and reduce costs. This is the future of inclusive, borderless commerce, and we’re proud to lead it.”
With this latest move, PayPal is signaling a clear bet on crypto and stablecoins as tools for global commerce, not just speculation.
