Bhutan Partners With 3iQ to Put Part of Its Bitcoin Treasury to Work

Bhutan is taking another step in its long-term Bitcoin strategy after selecting Canadian investment firm 3iQ to manage a portion of the country’s Bitcoin treasury.

The agreement is part of the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), Bhutan’s special administrative region, which aims to become a global hub for digital finance and innovation. Under the partnership, 3iQ will oversee part of the treasury while helping build local expertise and establishing a long-term presence in the country.

Bhutan Doubles Down on Bitcoin

Bhutan has accumulated one of the world’s largest sovereign Bitcoin holdings, largely through hydro-powered mining operations. The latest partnership follows the country’s plan to allocate up to 10,000 BTC to support the growth of Gelephu Mindfulness City and its financial ecosystem.

Building for the Long Term

3iQ CEO Pascal St-Jean described the partnership as a major responsibility, saying the firm is committed to managing Bhutan’s capital

“Responsibly, transparently and for the long term.”

Officials in Bhutan also said the collaboration is only the beginning, with additional initiatives expected as Gelephu works toward becoming an international financial center focused on sustainable innovation.
