Bitcoin adoption continues to expand worldwide, and Bhutan has now made a decisive move by allocating nearly $1 billion worth of Bitcoin to support the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a project designed to strengthen the country’s long-term economy.
The Bhutanese government confirmed that up to 10,000 Bitcoin will be used to fund infrastructure and growth initiatives tied to the city. The decision was announced during the King’s national address, where the purpose behind the allocation was made clear.
“As your King, I have to make sure that every Bhutanese is a guardian, stakeholder, and beneficiary of GMC. This is for our people, our youth, and our country,”
he added.
Rather than selling its holdings, Bhutan plans to treat Bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset, focusing on capital preservation and sustainable returns. Officials emphasized governance and transparency, stating that the BTC will be managed under strict guidelines to minimize risk.
Estimates indicate Bhutan now controls more than 11,000 Bitcoin, placing it among the largest government holders globally.
Launched in 2024, Gelephu Mindfulness City aims to curb youth migration by creating high-value jobs and attracting international businesses. The project spans around 10% of the country’s land area, offering regulatory flexibility for fintech, digital asset firms, and crypto-related innovation.
Beyond Bitcoin, Bhutan continues to expand its blockchain presence, already integrating crypto payments into tourism and collaborating with major exchanges to improve real-world adoption.
