Arthur Hayes: Bitcoin Could Wake Up if the Fed Steps In to Support Japan

Arthur Hayes says Fed intervention in Japan could inject liquidity and spark a new Bitcoin rally.

Arthur Hayes believes Bitcoin may finally break out of its long consolidation phase, but only if global central banks step back into money-printing mode.

The BitMEX co-founder recently shared his view that rising stress in Japan’s financial system could force intervention from the US Federal Reserve, creating the kind of liquidity environment that has historically benefited Bitcoin.

In his latest essay, “Woomph,” Hayes points to Japan’s weakening yen and surging government bond yields as warning signs. If markets spiral further, he expects central banks to respond with aggressive measures. As Hayes put it:

“Will a meltdown of the yen and JGB markets cause some sort of money printing by the Bank of Japan or the Fed? The answer is yes…This discussion of Japanese financial markets is important because for Bitcoin to exit its sideways funk, it needs a healthy dose of money printing.”

The concern is that Japanese investors could dump US Treasuries in favor of higher-yield domestic bonds, putting pressure on global markets. To prevent that scenario, Hayes suggests the Fed could inject liquidity by coordinating with major financial institutions, indirectly supporting Japan’s bond market and expanding its own balance sheet.

That kind of intervention would increase global liquidity, a setup that has often favored risk assets. More money in the system typically weakens fiat currencies, making Bitcoin more appealing as an alternative store of value.

For now, Bitcoin remains range-bound, trading near $89,000 and struggling to reclaim the $100,000 level. Hayes warns that without a fresh liquidity catalyst, the market could continue moving sideways. But any confirmed action from the Fed or the Bank of Japan could quickly change sentiment and ignite the next major move for Bitcoin.
