Canary Capital Joins ETF Race: Former Valkyrie CIO Seeks to Bring Solana to U.S. Investors Amid Growing Institutional Interest

In a significant move for the blockchain industry, Canary Capital, founded by former Valkyrie CIO Steven McClurg, has filed for a Solana ETF with the U.S. SEC. Canary Capital, just weeks into operation, is now one of three U.S. firms seeking SEC approval for a Solana ETF, aiming to tap into growing institutional interest in Solana. Notably, Solana has surpassed Ethereum in active address numbers across major blockchains, showcasing increased adoption and network engagement.

The Rise of Solana in Institutional Markets

Canary Capital’s filing adds to mounting excitement around Solana, whose unique architecture and speed are increasingly appealing to institutional investors. Solana’s market performance has surged alongside its adoption in 2024, underscoring the potential for blockchain projects in decentralized finance (DeFi) and beyond. Canary Capital’s choice to enter the Solana ETF arena aligns with its broader commitment to crypto, reflected in its previous applications for Litecoin and Ripple ETFs.

Regulatory Headwinds and Institutional Demand

Despite the demand, the Solana ETF faces regulatory obstacles. While Bitcoin ETFs gained approval due to proven decentralization and established futures trading, alternative crypto ETFs like Solana’s must still meet strict SEC requirements. Yet, optimism remains; VanEck’s Head of Digital Assets Research, Mathew Sigel, remains hopeful, though VanEck’s and 21Shares’ August applications were denied.

Global Momentum for Solana ETFs

Beyond the U.S., Brazil has already approved spot Solana ETFs through QR Asset and Hashdex, reflecting growing international momentum. If Canary Capital and other U.S.-based firms secure regulatory approval, Solana could soon become a mainstream investment vehicle, potentially reshaping blockchain’s role in traditional finance.

Established by a former Valkyrie executive, Canary Capital underscores traditional finance’s expanding interest in crypto assets. The firm’s push for Solana and other blockchain-based ETFs signals a growing belief in digital assets’ value, suggesting that more firms could follow suit. With demand for decentralized assets rising, Canary Capital’s latest filing might mark a turning point for institutional crypto investments.
