ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood believes US President Donald Trump could shift toward actively purchasing Bitcoin for a national strategic reserve as early as 2026, moving beyond the current reliance on seized digital assets.
Speaking on the Bitcoin Brainstorm podcast, Wood said the US originally aimed to hold one million Bitcoin, a goal that may require direct market purchases.
“It seems as though there’s been reticence about actually buying Bitcoin for the strategic reserve. So far, it’s confiscated. The original intent was to own a million Bitcoin. So I actually think they will start buying.”
According to Wood, political timing plays a major role. With midterm elections approaching, she believes Trump wants to avoid becoming a “lame duck” president and sees Bitcoin as a forward-looking policy move that could strengthen his position.

Wood also pointed to the Trump family’s growing exposure to crypto and deeper ties between the administration and major industry players such as Coinbase, Tether, and Ripple. The White House has hosted crypto-related events and issued executive orders focused on digital asset stockpiles and regulatory coordination.
Beyond reserves, Wood suggested the administration may push for crypto-friendly tax changes, including a de minimis exemption that would remove capital gains taxes on small Bitcoin transactions.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading near $90,460. Wood continues to stand by her long-term forecast, predicting Bitcoin could reach $1 million by 2030.
