Coinbase, the leading cryptocurrency exchange in the U.S., has introduced its wrapped Bitcoin token, cbBTC, on the Solana blockchain, enabling seamless integration with decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms.
SPL Token Pegged 1:1 with Bitcoin
The new token, pegged 1:1 with Bitcoin, is designed as an SPL token to maintain stable value. As of now, Coinbase has minted approximately 135 cbBTC, worth around $10 million, marking the start of its Solana-based project.
Wide Integration Across Solana Platforms
Several prominent Solana platforms, including Jupiter, Meteora, Kamino Finance, Raydium, Phoenix, Jito, and Drift, have already integrated cbBTC into their services. Kamino Finance, in particular, has outlined plans to become a major hub for cbBTC transactions within the DeFi space.
Joining a Growing List of Wrapped Bitcoin Options
cbBTC now joins other wrapped Bitcoin initiatives, such as Threshold’s tBTC, Zeus Network’s zBTC, and Wormhole’s WBTC, broadening the options available for Bitcoin usage in DeFi applications.
Since its launch in September, cbBTC has seen impressive growth, with a market cap surpassing $1 billion. However, it still lags behind BitGo’s Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), which currently holds an $11 billion market cap across multiple networks.
