Ethereum Is Getting Much Faster, But It’s Not the Full Story Yet

Faster confirmations arrive, but concerns remain over reliability and decentralization

Ethereum is on track for a major usability upgrade that could dramatically cut waiting times, but not everyone is convinced it’s the breakthrough it’s being framed as.

For anyone who’s ever transferred funds from Ethereum to an exchange or another network, the delay is familiar. Transactions can take minutes to feel “safe,” leaving funds stuck in limbo. It’s one of the biggest friction points in the ecosystem, and a reason some users have drifted toward faster chains.

That might soon improve.

A new feature called the Fast Confirmation Rule (FCR) is being rolled out by Ethereum’s core developers. Once active, it aims to reduce deposit confirmation times from anywhere between a couple of minutes and over ten minutes down to roughly 13 seconds. The best part: it doesn’t require a disruptive network upgrade, clients can adopt it gradually.

This could be one of the most noticeable UX improvements Ethereum has seen in years.

Exchanges would be able to credit deposits much faster, Layer 2 networks would see smoother inflows, and cross-chain infrastructure could operate with less risk and lower capital requirements.

Vitalik Buterin described the upgrade as providing

“A hard guarantee that Ethereum will not revert after one slot,”

calling it strong enough for many real-world use cases.

A new fast confirmation rule mechanism lets you get a hard guarantee that Ethereum will not revert after one slot (12 seconds)

Security assumptions are (i) supermajority honest, (ii) network latency under ~3s. So one step below economic finality, but very strong for many use…

Still, that claim is exactly where the debate begins.

While FCR speeds things up, it doesn’t replace full finality, it sits just below it. In practice, it depends on two key assumptions: that validators behave honestly and that the network stays fast and stable.

Critics point out that both conditions are far from guaranteed. A large share of staked ETH is concentrated among a handful of players, with platforms like Lido already holding a significant portion. At the same time, global latency and network disruptions are always a possibility in a decentralized system.

If those assumptions break down, the network simply falls back to its current confirmation time, around 13 minutes.

So while Ethereum is clearly moving in the right direction, some see this as more of a step forward than a leap ahead, especially when other chains already offer near-instant finality.

Still, for everyday users moving funds around the ecosystem, even a conditional 13-second confirmation could make a real difference.
