Ethereum’s price hovers at $3,395 today, marking a 0.5% dip as the broader crypto market declines by 1.5% in the past 24 hours. ETH has faced a 15% drop over the last two weeks and is down 8% for the month. However, its year-to-date growth of 47% suggests that its performance, while steady, has lagged behind expectations in 2024.
Crypto analyst Carl Runefelt has identified a potential game-changing pattern on Ethereum’s four-hour chart. He points to a symmetrical triangle that historically indicates a major move in either direction. Runefelt suggests that if Ethereum breaks upward, it could rally to $3,900, a level not seen since earlier this month. Conversely, if it breaks downward, it risks falling as low as $2,920.
While predicting the immediate outcome is challenging, the longer-term picture for Ethereum remains optimistic. Several bullish factors could shape its trajectory in the coming months. For instance, pro-crypto regulatory changes in the US, including a new SEC chair in January, may foster a more favorable environment for digital assets. Additionally, the release of $12 billion in stablecoins by FTX could inject liquidity into the market, potentially boosting Ethereum and other altcoins.
Ethereum’s fundamentals also continue to shine. As the largest layer-one blockchain, it dominates the market, accounting for over half of the total value locked (TVL) across all crypto protocols. This figure doesn’t even include its layer-two networks, which add even more utility and value to its ecosystem.
Momentum indicators suggest that Ethereum could soon regain its footing. On the one-hour chart, its RSI has climbed above 50 and is trending toward 70, signaling potential buying pressure. Analysts predict that ETH could recover to $3,500 within days, with a target of $4,000 by the end of January if current conditions hold.
While short-term volatility persists, ETH’s dominant position and upcoming market catalysts indicate that its long-term prospects remain highly favorable. Whether the immediate move is up or down, ETH continues to be a critical player in shaping the future of the crypto landscape.
