A cybersecurity researcher says they accidentally purchased a counterfeit Ledger hardware wallet from a Chinese online marketplace, highlighting how scams are becoming more sophisticated and harder to spot.

Looked Legit; Until It Didn’t

The buyer, posting on Reddit under the name Past_Computer2901, ordered what appeared to be a genuine Ledger Nano S Plus. The price matched the official store, and the packaging looked authentic enough to pass a quick inspection.

However, things changed once the device was plugged in. When connected to the official Ledger Live app, the wallet failed the built-in authenticity check, the first clear sign something was wrong.

According to the researcher, the fake wasn’t a sloppy copy. It was convincing enough that many buyers could easily trust it, especially given the normal price and professional-looking packaging.

Firmware Clues Raised More Questions

After digging deeper, the researcher analyzed the firmware and found indicators pointing to components linked to Espressif Systems. That doesn’t confirm any direct involvement, but it suggests the counterfeit device was built with a level of technical detail beyond simple visual cloning.

Why This Matters

Hardware wallets like Ledger are designed to remove trust from the equation, but buying them from unofficial marketplaces can reintroduce risk. In this case, the device was caught early thanks to the authenticity check, before any recovery phrase or sensitive data was entered.

The takeaway is simple: always purchase hardware wallets directly from official sources. Even a device that looks completely legitimate could still be compromised.
