FTX has announced plans to begin reimbursing $16.5 billion to affected customers starting March 2025. CEO John J. Ray III shared that fund distribution will kick off in early 2025, with the exchange finalizing the necessary procedures by early December this year.
Finalizing Distribution Plans
By December, FTX aims to complete agreements with agents tasked with distributing funds to eligible customers. Instructions for setting up accounts and verifying information through the customer portal will follow.
An exact launch date for the reimbursement plan will be announced by the end of December, contingent on court approval for disputed claim reserves. Once effective, verified claims in the Convenience Class will receive payments within 60 days of the plan’s implementation.
Customers are required to act promptly to participate in the first round of distributions. This includes opening an account with FTX’s distribution partners, completing identity verification, and submitting tax documentation before the specified deadline.
Legal Actions to Recover Assets
FTX’s dramatic collapse in November 2022, triggered by the misuse of customer funds to cover losses at its sister company, Alameda Research, revealed one of the crypto sector’s largest financial scandals. Valued at $32 billion at its peak, the exchange filed for bankruptcy after being unable to fulfill withdrawal requests.
A court-approved recovery plan aims to return 119% of allowed claims based on asset values at the time of the bankruptcy. To facilitate this, FTX has filed over 20 lawsuits in Delaware courts to recover assets for creditors, including a recent $1.8 billion claim against Binance, alleging fraudulent transfers orchestrated by former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.
FTX’s reimbursement plan represents a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to resolve one of the most infamous financial collapses in cryptocurrency history.
