Sam Bankman-Fried, once the face of a major crypto empire, has been placed in solitary confinement at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. This follows an interview with Tucker Carlson that was posted on YouTube on March 6, reportedly without approval from prison authorities. The video has already racked up hundreds of thousands of views, leading to disciplinary action.

During the conversation, Bankman-Fried discussed prison life, mentioning his interactions with other inmates, including Sean “Diddy” Combs. Despite the circumstances, he described Combs as friendly, offering a rare glimpse into life behind bars.

The fallout from the interview didn’t stop with his punishment. Mark Botnick, who had been managing Bankman-Fried’s public relations since the downfall of his crypto company, has resigned. Botnick stated he had no involvement in setting up the interview and decided to step away following the controversy.

Could a Presidential Pardon Be in the Cards?

Once one of the richest figures in crypto, Bankman-Fried is reportedly hoping for a presidential pardon. This speculation grew after a previous high-profile case resulted in a pardon, leading some to wonder if history could repeat itself.

In the interview, he shared his thoughts on the future of cryptocurrency under a potential new administration, expressing cautious optimism.

Hopefully is what I would say. You look at what the Trump administration said going into office, there are a lot of good things.

He also criticized financial regulators, saying they have been slow to adapt and have made it difficult for the industry to grow in the U.S.

They’re big giant bureaucracies in the federal government. They’re not used to changing overnight. They have been playing a really obstructive role for a decade in crypto. It’s 30% of the world’s finance, but only 5% of the world’s crypto. The reason is entirely regulatory. The U.S. has been uniquely difficult to work with.

Meanwhile, creditors of his collapsed exchange are finally seeing some repayments. Affected users with claims under $50,000 started receiving payments in February, with more scheduled for May.
