A woman in Hong Kong has lost nearly $3.3 million after falling victim to a sophisticated Crypto investment Scam disguised as a romantic relationship. Police say the fraud was one of 25 similar cases reported within just a single week.
Fake Romance, Fake Profits
According to investigators, the victim met someone online who gradually earned her trust before introducing what appeared to be a profitable cryptocurrency investment platform.
The website showed impressive gains, with her portfolio supposedly growing by more than 800%, encouraging her to invest even more money.
The Trap
Everything changed when she tried to withdraw her funds.
The platform blocked the transaction, while both the online partner and a supposed investment adviser suddenly disappeared. By then, the victim had transferred more than HK$26 million ($3.3 million).
Authorities Issue Warning
Hong Kong police say these scams often follow the same pattern: scammers build trust over weeks or months, display fake investment profits, and then prevent victims from accessing their money while demanding additional fees or simply vanishing. Authorities are urging the public to stay cautious when strangers online promote cryptocurrency investment opportunities.
