On October 25, Lido’s liquid staking protocol launched its Community Staking Module (CSM) on the Ethereum mainnet, enabling stakers to become solo validators with a minimum of 2.4 ETH. This move aims to lower the barriers to Ethereum staking, making it accessible to those with limited technical expertise and reducing the high capital requirements typically needed to operate a validator node.
Currently in its “Early Adoption” phase, the CSM is open only to select community stakers, with plans for a fully permissionless phase on the horizon. The module’s mainnet deployment was approved with support from 109 Lido DAO governance members, who allocated 71 million LDO tokens in favor of the proposal, while 86 members opposed.
Lido remains the largest decentralized application by total value locked, with over $24 billion in its smart contracts (DefiLlama). CSM previously underwent testing on Ethereum’s Holesky testnet, where over 370 node operators—including 70 solo stakers—participated in its initial three-month trial.
Lowering Barriers to Entry for Ethereum Stakers
The CSM reduces the usual 32 ETH validator requirement to just 2.4 ETH, allowing more participants to join Ethereum staking without needing advanced technical setups or significant financial investment. Through Lido’s interface, aspiring validators can bypass the complexities of operating their own systems, supporting Ethereum’s decentralization.
CSM Technical Lead Dmitry Gusakov commented,
“The Community Staking Module allows more people to contribute to Ethereum’s security and decentralization, creating a healthier, more resilient network. We’re committed to breaking down barriers so anyone, regardless of financial or technical background, can contribute to Ethereum’s security.”
Built on the Staking Router, CSM introduces a modular framework designed to expand entry points for new node operators, enhancing Ethereum’s accessibility and security.
