Litecoin‘s official X account was briefly compromised on January 11, with hackers using it to promote a fake token linked to the Solana network. The fraudulent post, which has since been deleted, claimed, “LTC is now in Solana,” accompanied by a contract address and a suspicious link to the scam token.

🗞️BREAKING: The #Litecoin account on X appears to be compromised and is promoting low-cap #Solana scam tokens.

The Litecoin team confirmed they had regained control of the account, explaining the breach stemmed from a compromised delegated account, which has now been removed.

Hacking incidents on X have become increasingly common in recent months, with bad actors exploiting popular accounts to promote fake tokens or phishing schemes aimed at stealing funds and sensitive information.

Litecoin's X account was briefly compromised today and posts that were not authorized were published. These were live only for a matter of seconds before being deleted. We're still investigating the issue, but immediately found a delegated account that was compromised and removed…

A Trend of Social Media Hacks

Litecoin’s experience is not isolated. Several high-profile accounts on X have been targeted recently:

  • EigenLayer (October 18): Hackers used the account to promote a fake “Season 2 Stakedrop” campaign, posting malicious links before the team regained control.
  • Wiz Khalifa (November 3): The rapper’s account was hijacked to advertise a fake memecoin, misleadingly linked to the artist.
  • Cardano Foundation (December 8): Scammers falsely claimed Cardano would discontinue ADA support, promoting a fake token called “ADAsol” that generated $500,000 in trading volume before collapsing.
  • Yat Siu (December 26): The co-founder of Animoca Brands had his account used to push a fake memecoin called “Animoca Brands,” unrelated to the company.

These incidents highlight the growing threat of social media account hacks, with scammers frequently targeting the crypto community to spread fraudulent tokens and phishing links.

The Litecoin breach serves as another reminder to exercise caution when interacting with social media accounts, even those appearing legitimate, and to verify announcements directly from official sources.
