The Lost Treasure:
James Howells, who made headlines for accidentally discarding a hard drive containing Bitcoin worth over $500 million, is taking significant legal action to recover his lost fortune.
The Legal Action:
In a desperate move, the Wales-based software engineer has filed a lawsuit against Newport City Council, seeking approximately £495.31 million (around $647 million) in damages for their repeated refusals to excavate the landfill where his hard drive is buried. This drive reportedly holds about 8,000 Bitcoins, as detailed by WalesOnline. Howells clarified that his lawsuit is more of a strategy aimed at persuading the council to permit the excavation rather than a straightforward claim for damages.

He has put together a team of experts ready to conduct the excavation at no expense to the council and has also proposed giving them 10% of the value of any Bitcoins recovered.
Upcoming Court Hearing:
The case is scheduled for a hearing in December. However, Newport Council has described the lawsuit as “weak” and expressed concerns regarding the potential environmental impact of the proposed excavation. This unusual saga dates back to 2013 when Howells inadvertently tossed the hard drive containing 8,000 BTC while cleaning his office.
Valuation Context:
The amount he seeks reflects the peak valuation of his Bitcoin stash earlier this year when the cryptocurrency reached a new all-time high. As it stands, 8,000 Bitcoins are currently valued at approximately $514.37 million, based on a market price of $64,296.34 per coin.
