A Japanese investment firm is doubling down on its digital asset strategy with a fresh round of funding.
On Monday, Metaplanet announced the issuance of 2 billion yen (around $13.3 million) in zero-interest bonds, with proceeds earmarked for acquiring more BTC. The move aligns with the company’s broader vision of integrating digital assets into its financial strategy.
These bonds, approved in a board meeting on March 31, will be allocated to EVO FUND, with full redemption planned for September 30, 2025. Investors also have the option for early redemption under specific conditions, offering added flexibility.
To facilitate repayment, Metaplanet intends to utilize proceeds from its stock acquisition rights, as outlined in its January 2025 filings. The company expects minimal impact on earnings but sees this as a strategic step toward reshaping its financial positioning.
Following a similar playbook to U.S.-based firms, Metaplanet has been actively increasing its holdings since April 2024. It currently holds 3,200 BTC, valued at approximately $260.8 million, and has set an ambitious target of 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025.

Metaplanet views digital assets as a hedge against Japan’s ongoing economic challenges, including currency fluctuations and rising debt levels. By shifting its balance sheet toward decentralized assets, the company aims to reduce reliance on traditional financial systems.
In a notable development, Eric Trump was recently appointed as the first member of Metaplanet’s new Strategic Board of Advisors. His involvement, according to the company, is expected to accelerate efforts to expand adoption and awareness.
