MicroStrategy Inc., led by co-founder and chairman Michael Saylor, has initiated efforts to raise a significant $42 billion for additional Bitcoin purchases, seeking to fund this strategy through stock and debt offerings. The company has set up an “at-the-market” (ATM) stock sale, allowing it to issue up to $21 billion in equity at prevailing market prices, and aims to raise another $21 billion through debt sales. MicroStrategy’s new funding initiative underscores its continued commitment to Bitcoin as a strategic asset.
This move builds on MicroStrategy’s ongoing practice of leveraging capital markets to bolster its Bitcoin reserves. The enterprise software firm has already raised billions in recent months via convertible senior notes and similar ATM stock offerings, reinforcing its stance on cryptocurrency. During the third quarter alone, the company added $2.1 billion through these financial instruments, with another $800 million raised earlier in the year.
MicroStrategy’s approach, however, doesn’t obligate the firm to reach the full $42 billion or achieve it in a single step. The ATM setup allows flexibility, meaning MicroStrategy can pace its share sales as needed, potentially taking advantage of favorable market conditions over time.
“We see the $42 billion as ambitious but not unattainable”,
said Sean McNulty, director of trading at liquidity provider Arbelos Markets.
The scale of the new target dwarfs recent financing efforts by other publicly traded firms, positioning MicroStrategy as a leader among companies adopting Bitcoin as a corporate strategy. This push comes amid a year of soaring stock value for the company, which has surged 500%, outpacing Bitcoin’s approximate 110% gain in the same period.
According to trading experts, this capital-raising plan aligns with the company’s high-risk, high-reward strategy—aiming to capitalize on Bitcoin’s potential upside. If successful, the move could set new precedents for Bitcoin adoption in corporate treasury management.
