Defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox moved roughly 32,371 BTC, valued at $2.19 billion, into unmarked wallets on Monday night, according to blockchain analytics firm Arkham. This marks the largest transfer from Mt. Gox in recent months.
Of the transferred amount, around 30,371 BTC went to a wallet tagged “1FG2C…Rveoy,” while another 2,000 BTC was initially placed in a Mt. Gox cold wallet labeled “1Jbez…LAPs6.” That 2,000 BTC was later redirected to an unidentified wallet, “15gNR…a8Aok.”
This follows a pattern seen last week when Mt. Gox transferred 500 BTC to unmarked wallets, sparking speculation about the exchange’s intentions—possibly preparing for repayments to creditors. Past transfers have preceded repayments, which were often facilitated through exchanges like Bitstamp and Kraken.
Mt. Gox, once the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange, collapsed in 2014 after losing 850,000 BTC in a security breach. Creditors have been awaiting compensation since, with the repayment deadline recently postponed from October 31, 2024, to October 31, 2025.
