NFT artist DeeKay recently shared the devastating experience of losing his entire life savings and web3 earnings due to a cyberattack. DeeKay revealed that the hack occurred during a 14-hour flight from Korea to New York, leaving him completely offline and unable to prevent the attack as it unfolded.
Life Savings Vanished, NFTs Left Untouched
The artist explained that his seed phrase—a crucial piece of information needed to access crypto wallets—was stored in a photo of a handwritten note that was backed up on Google Drive. Despite hiding this photo in an obscure folder, DeeKay was surprised that there were no signs of unusual login attempts or suspicious activity on his accounts, making the breach all the more mysterious.
He speculated that the security leak could have come from the physical copy of the seed phrase or through a previous use of public WiFi. However, DeeKay emphasized that he had not interacted with anyone suspicious or downloaded any unknown files prior to the incident.
Although all of his cryptocurrency was stolen, it struck him as odd that his NFTs remained untouched by the hackers. DeeKay has since begun transferring his remaining NFTs to a more secure wallet in an effort to safeguard what little he has left.
Financial Hardship and Emotional Toll
The impact of the theft has been deeply troubling for DeeKay, who highlighted the financial burden placed on him, as his family depends on him for support. He called the situation one of the most difficult challenges he’s ever faced.
“I’ve lost everything, and this is probably the toughest challenge of my life,” DeeKay said, expressing exhaustion and a need to rest before deciding his next steps.
