A recent alert highlights a fake wallet browser extension targeting Firefox users. Crypto platform OKX issued a warning about a fraudulent wallet plugin falsely branded as theirs on the Firefox plugin store.
In an official statement shared on X, OKX clarified,
“We have not released any Firefox plugins. If you’ve used this malicious plug-in, transfer your wallet assets immediately.”
The platform also confirmed filing a complaint with Firefox to ensure the extension’s removal.

Browser plugins are commonly used to add features to web interfaces, but OKX emphasized that users should only download extensions from their official site to avoid scams.
The risks associated with malicious plugins are significant. A report by Kaspersky pointed out that some fake extensions are hard for antivirus software to detect. They can alter website elements, engage in phishing attacks, steal credentials, and even drain cryptocurrency wallets.
This isn’t the first case of browser extensions being used for crypto scams. In 2021, a fraudulent Firefox add-on named “Safepal Wallet” was live on Mozilla’s official store for seven months, draining users’ funds. Similarly, in May 2024, a malicious Chrome extension manipulated website cookies to steal crypto funds, costing a trader $70,000.
Phishing attacks remain one of the most prevalent threats in the crypto space. According to CertiK, over $1 billion was lost in 2024 alone due to such schemes, marking a 331% increase from the previous year.
Crypto users are reminded to stay vigilant, avoid unofficial downloads, and double-check plugin sources to protect their assets.
