The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has barred access to the Solana-based platform Pumpdotfun, citing concerns over unauthorized financial services and potential scams.

FCA Warns Against Pumpdotfun

On December 3, the FCA issued a statement cautioning the public about Pumpdotfun, stating:

“This firm may be providing or promoting financial services or products without our permission. You should avoid dealing with this firm and beware of scams.”

The regulator expressed particular concern that Pumpdotfun “may be targeting people in the UK” without proper authorization, urging users to avoid the platform.

As a result, UK-based users attempting to access the platform are met with a notice:

“Restricted jurisdiction. Our systems have identified that you are in the United Kingdom. In accordance with the laws and regulations of the United Kingdom, this site is currently unavailable to users in the United Kingdom.”

Users with assets on the platform are provided a link to withdraw their funds, but the company has not issued a public response to the FCA’s warning through its official channels.

Regulatory and User Risks

Under UK regulations, crypto platforms must register with the FCA if they are subject to anti-money laundering laws. The FCA has warned that customers using unregistered services risk losing their funds with limited or no recourse.

“If issues arise, users may lack financial protections and face difficulties recovering their money,”

the regulator emphasized.

A History of Controversy

Pumpdotfun, launched in January, has been mired in controversy. It allows users to create and trade Solana tokens without coding experience, but its features and moderation have drawn criticism:

  • In May, a livestreaming feature was introduced, leading to disturbing incidents, including stunts involving threats to animal safety and a staged suicide.
  • In October, the platform faced severe backlash when child sexual abuse material was discovered, exposing moderation lapses.

These events prompted Pumpdotfun to disable its livestreaming feature entirely.

Ethical and Legal Questions

Despite its controversies, Pumpdotfun accounted for 62% of Solana transactions in November, according to Dune Analytics. However, its mounting legal and ethical issues, coupled with the FCA’s warning, raise questions about its sustainability and long-term viability.

The platform is reportedly registered in the UK under Baton Corporation Ltd., with employees based in London, further complicating its regulatory challenges.
