Trump’s memecoin earnings spark fresh debate
The figures have reignited concerns over the growing intersection between politics and crypto investments.
Most Trump Memecoin holders are in the red
Blockchain analytics show that roughly 988,000 wallets holding the Trump Memecoin were sitting at a combined $3.81 billion in realized and unrealized losses by the end of June.
Meanwhile, Trump’s latest financial disclosure revealed at least $1.4 billion in crypto-related income during the reporting period, with a large share linked to licensing agreements and token-related ventures.
The Memecoin briefly surged after launching just days before Trump’s inauguration but has since fallen about 97% from its all-time high of $75.35.
Early buyers profited while most investors lost
Data suggests nearly two-thirds of Trump Memecoin buyers lost money, while fewer than 500,000 wallets captured roughly $4 billion in profits by buying early and selling during the token’s rapid rise.
One investor described the experience as “almost a legal scam,” saying he lost roughly half of a $500,000 investment after trusting Trump’s public support for the token.
Political scrutiny grows
The project’s success has fueled debate in Washington as lawmakers continue discussing cryptocurrency regulation.
Some lawmakers have proposed banning elected officials and their spouses from launching or promoting Memecoin projects, arguing they create potential conflicts of interest. Trump, however, has defended his crypto ventures, maintaining there is nothing wrong with profiting from digital assets.
