Bitcoin reached a fresh all-time high on Wednesday as investors responded to President-elect Donald Trump’s U.S. election win, sparking optimism throughout the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin trading volume spiked by 145% within 24 hours.
Price Rises as Trump Gains Ground
Starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Bitcoin’s price rose nearly 8.5%, tracking Trump’s increasing lead. When polls closed on the East Coast, Bitcoin jumped from around $69,492 to $74,286 by midnight, aligning with Trump’s anticipated wins in Georgia and North Carolina, which limited Vice President Kamala Harris’s path to victory.
Around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday, Bitcoin peaked at $75,395. An hour later, with the Associated Press projecting Trump’s win in Pennsylvania, he addressed his supporters in West Palm Beach, Fla., celebrating his election.
Election night saw surges across the crypto market, with Dogecoin rising by 30%, supported by Elon Musk, a prominent Trump ally. Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by volume, also surged by nearly 9%.
Trump’s Pro-Crypto Stance Draws Industry Support
Although once skeptical, Trump championed cryptocurrency in 2024, appealing to single-issue crypto voters and drawing high-profile industry donations.
“With Trump’s win, we expect fewer regulatory challenges,”
commented Adam Blumberg, co-founder of Interaxis, a crypto and blockchain education firm.
Trump’s Vision for the U.S. as a Crypto Powerhouse
In July, Trump voiced ambitions for the U.S. to become the global “crypto capital” and predicted Bitcoin’s value would soar under his administration.
The Republican Party formally pledged to support cryptocurrency, promising that Trump would defend Americans’ rights to mine Bitcoin, self-custody digital assets, and transact without government surveillance.
Industry insiders anticipate that Trump’s administration will ease regulatory oversight on crypto. Trump has already promised to replace SEC Chair Gary Gensler, who has supported tighter crypto regulations.
“We may see more crypto-friendly regulators, saving companies time and resources currently spent on regulatory battles,”
Blumberg observed.
Prospects for Pro-Crypto Legislation
With Republicans likely to control both the Senate and potentially the House, crypto-friendly laws may gain traction in the next year.
“We could see new crypto and stablecoin legislation within 12 months,”
Blumberg added, and advised investors to brace for continued market fluctuations, noting that cryptocurrency volatility is likely to persist in the near future.
Crypto figures took to social media to celebrate Trump’s win. Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, tweeted,
“The crypto community has spoken—across party lines and nationwide. We look forward to working with the new Congress.”
