A man accused of posing as a rideshare driver in Scottsdale, Arizona, has been arrested for allegedly stealing $300,000 in digital assets from two passengers.
The suspect, identified as Nuruhussein Hussein, reportedly targeted individuals outside the W Hotel in two separate incidents in March and October. Authorities allege Hussein pretended to be the driver they requested, addressing passengers by name to gain trust.
Unauthorized Phone Access
Hussein allegedly asked passengers for their phones under false pretenses. In one instance, he claimed his device was broken and needed theirs. In another, he offered to fix an issue with the app after passengers noticed a confirmation error.
While holding the phones, Hussein reportedly accessed cryptocurrency accounts and transferred funds to his own wallet. Prosecutors stated he threatened one passenger who became suspicious, warning them to stay calm or face consequences.
On Dec. 11, Hussein was apprehended by local detectives with assistance from U.S. Secret Service agents. He faces multiple charges, including theft, fraud, and money laundering. He remains in custody with a $200,000 bond and strict conditions, including electronic monitoring and internet restrictions.
Offline Digital Asset Thefts on the Rise
This case reflects a broader rise in offline digital thefts. Reports show 19 such incidents globally in 2024, up from 17 in 2023. High-profile thefts, such as a recent Bitcoin ATM heist in Melbourne, highlight the growing challenges in securing digital assets in the physical world.
Law enforcement continues its investigation into the Scottsdale case while monitoring other trends in offline digital theft.
