Ethereum’s Price Surge
Ethereum (ETH) has experienced a nearly 5% increase in value over the past day, following Vitalik Buterin’s detailed announcement about “The Splurge.” This phase represents the concluding segment of Ethereum’s multi-stage evolution, which has included significant updates like the Merge, Surge, Verge, and Purge.
Objectives of ‘The Splurge’ and EOF Implementation
Buterin outlined four primary objectives for this phase:
- Achieve a high-performance, stable state for the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).
- Introduce account abstraction to enhance user security and convenience.
- Optimize transaction fees to boost scalability while minimizing risk.
- Investigate advanced cryptography to improve Ethereum’s long-term potential.
The upgrade will optimize the EVM and tackle efficiency challenges by introducing the EVM Object Format (EOF). This will simplify programming and improve the functionality of layer 2 solutions, paving the way for future enhancements. Buterin highlighted the trade-offs between layer 1 complexity and infrastructure complexity, noting that while adding EOF requires significant code adjustments, it ultimately streamlines higher-level languages and improves EVM implementations.

Looking Ahead: Improvements to EIP-1559
Buterin also discussed improvements to EIP-1559, which was activated in 2021 and has enhanced average block inclusion times. He pointed out some flaws in its formula that target 50-53% full blocks instead of 50%. Although EIP-4844 was introduced to address some concerns, additional weaknesses in Ethereum’s resource pricing remain unaddressed.
Overall, Buterin’s insights indicate that “The Splurge” could significantly strengthen Ethereum’s framework, addressing various inefficiencies and preparing for future developments. In response to the announcement, ETH’s price surged by 4.6% and is currently trading at around $2,600.
