The hacker responsible for the $230 million theft from WazirX is on the verge of successfully laundering the entire stolen amount. Just an hour ago, the hacker made a significant move by transferring 3,792 ETH (worth $9.93 million) to a new wallet, labeled “0xa6e.” This wallet is now routing the stolen Ethereum through Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixer often used to obscure the trail of illicit funds.
The breach originally took place on July 18, 2024, when the hacker stole a staggering $230 million from the WazirX exchange. In the process, they converted most of the stolen assets into 61,700 ETH, one of the most commonly used cryptocurrencies for transactions and investments.
Since September 3, 2024, the hacker has been carefully moving the stolen funds between different wallets to launder the money and avoid detection. Over the past 22 days, this strategy has allowed the hacker to evade authorities and almost completely finish washing the stolen assets.
With the latest transfer, it seems the hacker is in the final phase of this complex laundering process. The use of Tornado Cash signals that the hacker is attempting to further obscure the trail before the funds are fully integrated into the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
