Trading, Tipping & More: X Prepares to Dive Into Finance
X is stepping deeper into the world of financial services, with plans to let users invest, tip, and even store value directly on the app—hinting at Elon Musk’s long-term vision of turning the platform into a full-on financial hub.
X’s Wallet Rollout Begins This Year
At the center of it all is X Money, a digital wallet set to launch in partnership with Visa. U.S. users are expected to get first access before a wider rollout. The wallet will support peer-to-peer payments, creator tips, purchases, and possibly more down the line.

Speaking at the Cannes Lions festival, CEO Linda Yaccarino teased the next phase:
“Whether I can pay you for the pizza that we shared last night or make an investment or a trade—that’s the future.”
Regulators, Advertisers, and a Long Road Ahead
X isn’t sailing into this expansion without headwinds. Regulatory oversight, compliance rules, and money-laundering safeguards are all hurdles the company will need to clear. Add to that ongoing doubts from advertisers, many of whom paused campaigns after Musk’s 2022 takeover.
Although Yaccarino said most major brands have returned, skepticism lingers. She brushed off allegations about pressure tactics used on advertisers as “hearsay.”
Legal & Financial Moves Pile Up
X is also in the middle of a federal antitrust lawsuit, accusing major ad industry groups of organizing a boycott under the guise of content moderation.
Meanwhile, Musk shook things up again in March, transferring ownership of X to his AI startup xAI in an all-stock deal. The transaction valued xAI at $80B and X at $33B—including $12B in debt.
Some in the space questioned the move, suggesting the structure could expose xAI to added risk and legal complications. “Insanely dumb,” said Adam Cochran from Cinneamhain Ventures, who believes Musk used the deal to shift liabilities.
Looking Forward
Despite all this, forecasts expect X’s revenue to hit $2.3B this year—still a far cry from its 2022 peak, but showing signs of recovery.
Whether users will embrace financial features on the same platform where memes, markets, and debates collide remains to be seen—but the bet is clearly being placed.
