Mining Surplus Energy for Bitcoin

Several African countries are exploring state-backed Bitcoin mining as a way to turn unused energy into digital assets.

Whoa!

🇪🇹 Ethiopian Electric Power says it has raised over $200 million from Bitcoin mining

The revenue was generated by diverting electricity to Bitcoin mining, which was otherwise wasted due to a lack of transmission infrastructure.

With large hydroelectric, geothermal and natural gas resources often going underused due to limited infrastructure or weak local demand, governments are increasingly looking at mining as a way to monetize that excess power.

The strategy could also help countries build digital asset reserves and attract investment in energy and data center infrastructure.

Kazakhstan’s New Mining Framework

Kazakhstan is now offering a potential blueprint for how governments could integrate Bitcoin mining into national reserve strategies.

Under its new framework, large industrial miners can receive regulated electricity quotas through long-term agreements. In return, they must contribute 10% of their mined cryptocurrency, after electricity and delivery costs, to a fund connected to the country’s planned National Strategic Crypto Reserve.

The model effectively turns mining from a purely private business into part of a broader national economic strategy.

A Growing Government Trend

Kazakhstan joins countries such as Bhutan and El Salvador, which have already used domestic energy resources to accumulate Bitcoin.

As more governments search for ways to monetize surplus electricity, Bitcoin mining could increasingly become part of national energy and reserve policies.

The question now is whether more African nations will follow Kazakhstan’s lead.
