Bhutan is taking another step into the digital economy through a new partnership between Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) and the Sei Development Foundation. The country’s sovereign wealth fund will deploy a validator on the Sei Network, reinforcing Bhutan’s long-term Blockchain ambitions and expanding its role in next-generation financial infrastructure.

The validator is expected to go live in the first quarter of 2026 and will allow Bhutan to directly participate in securing and operating the Sei Network. By doing so, the Kingdom gains hands-on access to blockchain infrastructure, opening the door to experimentation in areas such as asset tokenization, digital payments, and advanced fintech solutions. The initiative is supported by Sapien Capital, a firm focused on science and technology investments.
This move aligns with Bhutan’s broader push into digital assets. The country already holds Bitcoin and Ethereum as part of its sovereign strategy and has been actively exploring how blockchain technology can support economic development. Running a validator gives Bhutan greater control, while also contributing to the decentralization and security of the global Sei Network.
Beyond infrastructure, the Sei validator could enable real-world blockchain use cases across Bhutan’s economy. Potential applications include tokenized assets, data-driven financial products, and new digital business models tailored to national needs. Sei’s reputation for fast, low-cost transactions makes it a practical choice for scaling these initiatives.
Bhutan has already started testing crypto-based payment systems in tourism, where visitors can pay via QR codes with instant conversion to local currency. The partnership with Sei builds on that momentum, positioning the country to play a more active role in shaping how Blockchain technology is adopted at a national level.
