Coinbase is preparing to offer U.S. traders access to perpetual futures contracts, expanding its product lineup with a feature long popular in offshore markets. The exchange confirmed the plan during its Crypto Summit in New York, signaling a strong push toward more advanced trading tools that meet regulatory standards.
Max Branzburg, VP of Product at Coinbase, emphasized that the upcoming offering is designed to align with Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) guidelines, an important step given the sensitive regulatory climate around derivatives in the U.S.
Perpetual futures, unlike traditional futures, don’t come with an expiry date. They allow traders to take long or short positions with leverage, a popular choice for more experienced market participants. Coinbase’s move comes just weeks after launching around-the-clock Bitcoin and Ethereum futures, with additional assets like XRP reportedly on the roadmap.
The company seems confident that the evolving regulatory stance will open doors for products previously considered too complex or risky for American users. Just last month, a CFTC commissioner hinted that the U.S. may soon warm up to the idea of crypto perpetual futures, which have traditionally been offered by international platforms.

Coinbase has been on a roll with its product expansion. In addition to the futures announcement, it also revealed a new partnership with Stripe to integrate USDC payments on Spotify, a sign that the exchange is also thinking beyond trading. And in June 2024, Stripe partnered with Coinbase to streamline fiat-to-crypto transactions, reducing costs and processing times for users.
While platforms like Hyperliquid are in talks with regulators about compliant futures trading, and others like COTI explore privacy-first decentralized alternatives, Coinbase’s regulated approach could position it as a leader once U.S. policy fully embraces these instruments.
