Key Takeaways

  • A CR7 meme coin on Solana hit a $5M market cap within hours before crashing close to zero.
  • The collapse follows a previous fake CR7 token that peaked at $143M before losing 98% of its value.
  • Analysts warn investors as copycat celebrity meme coins continue to flood Solana.

CR7 Meme Coin’s Rapid Rise and Collapse

In the early hours of August 26, a token branded as CR7 meme coin launched on the Solana blockchain. Within just six hours, its market cap spiked to nearly $5 million, fueled by hype and fast-moving speculative trades. Trading activity was strong, with $55.1 million in volume recorded.

But the excitement was short-lived. The coin’s value quickly plummeted, leaving its market cap at just $359,000 by the end of the day.

This pump-and-dump pattern resembles earlier fraudulent launches attempting to capitalize on Cristiano Ronaldo’s name and popularity.

Rumors vs. Reality: Ronaldo’s Actual Web3 Involvement

Speculation around a possible CR7 token has been circulating for months, with viral posts on X suggesting an “official” launch. Some claimed such a coin could dominate the meme token market. However, no credible evidence or statements have ever confirmed these claims.

So far, Ronaldo’s only official move into Web3 has been through his partnership with Binance, launched in 2022. That collaboration has resulted in four NFT collections, but there has been no legitimate token release tied to him.

A Pattern of Fake CR7 Tokens

This isn’t the first time a CR7-branded coin has sparked frenzy. An earlier token reached a staggering $143 million market cap within 15 minutes of launch before collapsing 98% almost instantly.

Multiple CR7 copycat tokens have also appeared on Solana over recent months. Most failed to gain traction, rarely passing the $1 million market cap mark. The latest version, however, briefly stood out due to its rapid rise before the inevitable crash.

Blockchain analytics platforms, including Bubblemaps, have warned investors about these scams, noting that celebrity-branded tokens are increasingly being used to lure retail traders.

Wider Meme Coin Frenzy on Solana

The fake CR7 token launch comes just after Kanye West’s YZY meme coin exploded on Solana, briefly hitting a $3 billion market cap. On-chain analysis revealed over 90% of the supply was concentrated in six wallets, raising major concerns over centralization and manipulation.

Meanwhile, meme coin launchpads like Pump.fun continue to thrive, with reports showing more than $800 million in revenue generated. This has created a hotbed for opportunistic projects, many of them linked, falsely, to celebrities.

Investor Caution Urged

The repeated cycle of fake CR7 meme coins shows how easy it is for opportunistic developers to exploit celebrity names. While some investors profit during the hype-driven rise, most are left holding worthless tokens once the crash sets in.

The growing trend highlights why due diligence and skepticism are essential before investing in newly launched meme coins, especially those tied to global celebrities without official confirmation.
