Metaplanet just made headlines again—and for good reason. The Tokyo-based firm, often compared to MicroStrategy, has added another 1,004 Bitcoin to its balance sheet, a move that sent its stock price soaring 15% in a single day. This latest buy, valued at approximately $104 million, brings its total holdings for the year to a staggering 6,038 BTC.

In total, Metaplanet now holds around 7,800 BTC, putting it well on its way to its short-term goal of 10,000 coins. That’s about 78% of the way there, and it has achieved this in less than five months. Its aggressive accumulation has pushed Metaplanet past El Salvador in terms of Bitcoin ownership, earning it a spot among the top global holders.
In April, Metaplanet pushed its Bitcoin holdings to 5,000 BTC. The buy signaled a shift toward a more aggressive accumulation strategy that continued into the following months.
Investors clearly liked what they saw. Metaplanet’s share price, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, has now more than doubled in the past month. The company also recently reported ¥877 million ($6 million) in Q1 revenue—a record for them—which has only fueled the bullish sentiment further.
What makes Metaplanet’s strategy particularly noteworthy is how quickly it has scaled. According to Blockstream CEO Adam Back,
“Metaplanet is growing 3.8 times faster than MicroStrategy in terms of mNAV coverage,”
suggesting the Japanese firm may be setting a new benchmark in institutional Bitcoin adoption.
To fund its expansion, Metaplanet used a moving-strike warrant program—allowing it to raise funds flexibly without locking into a fixed price. Its cost basis per Bitcoin stands at roughly ¥712.5 million, and its Bitcoin strategy in 2025 alone has yielded a return of nearly 189%.
This latest purchase comes as Bitcoin hovers around $103,500, trying to break through a key resistance at $105,000. With traditional markets shaky after Moody’s downgrade of U.S. credit ratings and the S&P 500 facing sell pressure, Metaplanet’s focused Bitcoin play is looking increasingly bold—and possibly brilliant.
