MoonTags aim to make sending and receiving crypto as easy as using a username
MoonPay has rolled out MoonTags, a new feature designed to make crypto transfers simpler and safer for everyday users. Instead of copying and pasting long wallet addresses, people can now send and receive digital assets by entering a personalized username, similar to using a handle on social media.
Each account automatically comes with a default MoonTag, which can be customized with a unique name and even a profile photo. This small change tackles one of the most frustrating aspects of crypto transactions: the risk of mistakes when typing or copying complex wallet strings.
How MoonTags Work
MoonTags remove the need to manually select blockchains when sending funds. The system routes transactions automatically, cutting down on human error and making the process more user-friendly.
Users can also choose their privacy settings, either making their MoonTag discoverable for easier transfers or keeping it hidden for additional security. Importantly, MoonPay has confirmed there are no extra charges for using MoonTags, though cross-chain swaps or token conversions may still carry higher fees depending on the region.

However, accuracy still matters. Entering the wrong MoonTag could send funds to an unintended recipient, and just like any blockchain transaction, transfers cannot be reversed.
Global Launch and Regulatory Hurdles
MoonTags are set to go live worldwide on September 12, 2025, though availability will vary depending on local regulations. Certain regions, including the European Union and New York, have stricter compliance rules that may limit access.
This launch is part of MoonPay’s broader push for global adoption. In recent months, the company has expanded aggressively, securing a BitLicense to operate in all 50 U.S. states, partnering with Mastercard on payment solutions, and exploring stablecoin infrastructure with its Iron project.
Expanding Access to Crypto
MoonPay has also deepened its developer ecosystem. A recent integration with Turnkey allows fiat-to-crypto purchases in over 160 countries directly within apps, no redirects or external tools required. This move gives developers a single API to improve user experience and boost engagement.
By introducing MoonTags alongside these strategic partnerships, MoonPay continues to position itself as a leader in making crypto more accessible, intuitive, and integrated with traditional finance.
