Strategy Faces Growing Pressure as Bitcoin Financing Model Comes Under Scrutiny
The firm pointed to declining prices of both Strategy’s common stock (MSTR) and its preferred shares (STRC), warning that lower valuations may limit the company’s ability to raise fresh capital for future Bitcoin purchases.
The concerns come shortly after Strategy sold 32 Bitcoin, a notable move given executive chairman Michael Saylor’s long-standing stance against selling the asset.
Falling STRC Price Raises Concerns
Grayscale highlighted growing pressure surrounding STRC, Strategy’s preferred stock offering that was designed to trade around $100 per share while paying an 11.5% dividend. With the shares recently trading below that target, the company could face higher financing costs.
“If STRC remains below its intended price, Strategy may need to increase the dividend to attract investors,”
Grayscale’s head of research, Zach Pandl, noted.
Higher dividend payments would increase cash obligations and could make future Bitcoin sales more likely if additional liquidity is needed.
Bitcoin Buying Power Could Be Reduced
A prolonged decline in both STRC and MSTR shares may also weaken Strategy’s primary funding channels. Since the company has relied heavily on equity-related offerings to finance its Bitcoin acquisitions, lower share prices could make raising capital more difficult.
Despite these near-term challenges, Grayscale believes Bitcoin itself remains positioned for a recovery over the coming months.
Long-Term Outlook Remains Divided
While Grayscale sees potential obstacles ahead for Strategy, not everyone shares the same view.
Analysts at Standard Chartered recently argued that Bitcoin may be nearing a market bottom and maintained their $100,000 year-end target. The bank expects Strategy to return to aggressive Bitcoin accumulation, similar to its buying activity following a previous Bitcoin sale in 2022.
For now, investors are watching closely to see whether Strategy can continue growing its Bitcoin reserves without placing additional strain on its financing structure.
