On the 4th of July, a symbolic day for freedom in the U.S., World Liberty Financial, a project tied to Donald Trump, kicked off a major vote to decide whether its native token, $WLFI, should be opened up for public trading.
The announcement marks a turning point for the project, which until now has limited $WLFI movement within its internal ecosystem. Supporters are now being invited to weigh in on whether trading should be allowed on open markets, potentially boosting liquidity and user participation.
In a celebratory post, the team called the moment
“A homecoming for crypto”
and wished everyone a happy 4th of July from the
“New crypto capital of the world.”
If the vote passes, holders will be able to exchange $WLFI through peer-to-peer methods or secondary platforms. It’s a move many in the community have been asking for as the project scales. According to insiders, the trading option has been on the table for months, but the timing was aligned with Independence Day to highlight the project’s values around financial freedom.
There’s more tied to the proposal than just trading access. If approved, early investors will be able to transfer tokens, while further governance votes will determine the pace at which the remaining token supply becomes unlocked.
Founders, core contributors, and advisors would face longer lockup schedules to encourage long-term alignment. A second vote will fine-tune those timelines, ensuring flexibility as conditions evolve.
Those who supported the token in its early phase will be given partial access when trading begins. The rest of their allocation would be subject to the upcoming vote.
One of the biggest updates is around governance: the team plans to hand more control to token holders, allowing them to vote on matters like emissions, incentive distribution, and treasury use. The goal is to push decision-making further into the hands of the community.
World Liberty Financial has had a busy year, growing partnerships and expanding its presence, most notably through a collaboration with London-based Re7 Labs to boost global traction for its stablecoin, USD1.
With this new proposal, the Trump-associated project signals a shift from a closed-loop experiment to a more open and democratic financial system, driven by those who hold the token.
